Winner from PPOTF 2012 - Martin Beddall

Martin Beddall

An award winning documentary wedding photographer. He prefers to work in an honest, natural and photojournalistic style. His background in editorial photography and photojournalism assists with this style.

When approaching weddings, he shoots as if he was photographing a reportage photo essay, being aware of the importance of the atmosphere, the characters, the "fleeting moments", the emotion.

"... good photography is fundamentally good storytelling."

His preference is to shoot using natural light as much as possible, to remain unobtrusive within the photograph. No interference, or creating situations - but quietly observing.

His professional photographic career started after completing a Postgraduate diploma in Photojournalism at the London College of Printing, starting as a photojournalist for The Times and The Independent. Thrown into a very competitive world, he was working alongside (and sometimes against) some of the photojournalists he had one admired as a student, shooting portraits of politicians, famous actors, celebrities, to the drama of news stories or reportage - all working to tight deadlines.

"The beauty of photojournalism is you never know what the next assignment may be. You have to be able to adapt quickly - to the situation, the changing light or whatever other seeming obstacles and still deliver images that will be published around the world."
